INFLATION REMAINS BROAD, DESPITE DECLINES IN ENERGY PRICES

  • The Consumer Price Index (CPI) rose 0.2% in July from June and is up 3.2% in the last year.
  • The core CPI, which excludes food and energy, rose 0.2% in July and is up 4.7% from the previous year.
  • The overall food index rose 4.9%, food at home rose 3.2%, and food away from home rose 7.1% over the past 12 months.
  • The largest increase in food was for cereals and bakery products, which increased 7.0% and non-alcoholic beverages which increased 5.4%.
  • The index for food away from home rose 7.1%, full service meals rose 5.8%, and limited service meals rose 7.1% over the last 12 months.
  • The energy index declined 12.5% over the past 12 months.
  • Fuel oil decreased 26.5%, electricity increased 3.0%, and natural gas fell 13.7% over the last 12 months.
  • The index for all items less food and energy rose 4.7% over the past 12 months.
  • The index for shelter rose 7.7%, rent increased by 8.0%, motor vehicle insurance rose 17.8%, and motor vehicle maintenance and repair increased 12.70%.
